Barry is a UK based Welsh Artist born near Merthyr Tydfil and now based in the picturesque market town of Hay-On-Wye in the Welsh Marches . His work is currently focusing on an ongoing collection of contemporary atmospheric Welsh Landscapes employing an alchemy of inks , pigments , solutions , soot , ash , charcoal , found media , tannin , metal powders , beeswax , graphite and anything else that happens to fall in his path . . .
" I fully admit to ‘ most ‘ of my explorations ending with myself and an embarrassing amount of ruined paper laying in a soggy blackened heap in the corner ! I am forever grasping at shadows , waiting for the faint outline of a hill or bank of trees to emerge from the chaos and disorder of my alchemy of solutions , and all too often loosing it again as it dries and moves past that perfect point I was chasing ! “

NEWS . . . Saturday 5th to Sunday 13th SEPTEMBER 2026 is HEREFORDSHIRE ART WEEK !
A celebration of local creativity across Herefordshire and its neighbouring borders , hundreds of Artists and Venues open their doors to share their work and wares . . . come along and be inspired !
Hawthorn will be jumping on board obviously primarily showcasing my own work as a local Artist, but also hopefully with some other Herefordshire Artists such as Beryl Morgans and Leoma Drew . . . and as always at Hawthorn theres plenty more to seen from slightly further afield with a focus on Wales in particular . . .
We very recently paid an exciting visit to the Towyn based Studio of Lino and Woodcut Printmaker Ian Phillips so we currently have a wall full of his stunning and evocative Welsh landscapes adding a most welcome splash of light, mood and colour to our walls . . . they whisper to me of quiet moments in the wilderness . . . that time taken to simply quietly observe and breathe it in . . . moments alone with eyes undistracted . . . truly open and a Welsh breeze on the back of your neck ! As with all Artisanal Printmaking I think these have to be seen up close and in the flesh so do come and take a look !
We also feature works by other Artists and Makers featuring a great gang of contemporary Ceramacists and Potters, Wood Turning, hand crafted Jewellery and local Artists Cards etc etc so those who can do come along . . . Venue 73 in the book !

“ There is a state of raised awareness at night that I find exhilarating . . . a familiar sight can be re-cast with a whole new set of airs, feelings and emotions that simply do not occur to you in the light of day. I have several times nearly scared myself lifeless at the nocturnal motions and reverberating sounds of what later presented itself as merely a wandering sheep, badger, deer or stag, feral dog, wild boar or hill pony. The dark plays tricks . . . and the senses, innately and inherently open to the possibility of threat or danger in the darkness . . . in the ‘unseen’ . . . are most alive at night “
